Sullivan University is a university based in Louisville, Kentucky and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. With campuses in Louisville, Lexington, and Fort Knox, Sullivan has approximately 8,000 students and is Kentucky's largest private university. It is known for its dispute resolution programs and culinary arts program.

The mission of Sullivan University Global e-Learning is to educate students effectively and efficiently for employment in high need career fields and to provide graduates with viable employment assistance in locating positions commensurate with their Sullivan University e-Learning education.

This mission is attained by:

• Providing distance education classes for certain programs via the Internet through a stair-step approach to college education that enables students to progress through career-related programs as their abilities, finances, ambitions, and life circumstances permit.
• Providing learning experiences in an environment enhanced by student services and activities to enable students to take advantage of their interests and abilities to develop teamwork and leadership capabilities.
• Providing career and competency based classes combined with general education classes to expand the students' awareness of the world about them.
• Providing qualified faculty with academic and/or experiential preparation appropriate to their teaching assignments.

History

Sullivan Business College was founded in 1962 by A.O. Sullivan and his son, A.R. Sullivan, as a one-year school preparing people for careers. In 1972, the school began to offer associate degrees in addition to its one-year career diplomas. The institution was renamed in 1976 to Sullivan Junior College of Business to reflect its authority to grant associate degrees, and moved to its present Louisville campus on Bardstown Road and the Watterson Expressway. The school soon expanded by opening additional campuses -- its Ft. Knox campus was opened in 1982, and its campus in Lexington in 1985. In 1987 "Sullivan College" opened the National Center for Hospitality Studies offering degrees in culinary arts, baking and pastry arts, hotel and restaurant management and catering. Louisville Technical Institute and Spencerian College are also part of the Sullivan University System.

In 1990, the baccalaureate degree program was added, receiving its accreditation in 1992. The college began to offer an MBA degree in 1997. The name was changed to its present designation, Sullivan University, in 2000, reflecting the college's growth. In Fall 2008, Sullivan offers its first doctoral program, the Doctor of Pharmacy. Several of its degree programs are available online through its Global e-Learning Division.

The university still reflects its original philosophy of quickly preparing students for careers by offering a "stair step" approach. A student can attain a career diploma in one year, an associates in eighteen months, and a bachelor's after and additional eighteen months, and masters degree in an additional eighteen months. This way, they can attain employment at an entry level while working toward a degree. Sullivan maintains a graduate employment service that assists students in finding employment and its website reports that over 99% of graduates find employment.

Sullivan University operates on the quarter system with each period lasting approximately eleven weeks, thereby allowing students to fast track their college career. The Louisville campus also offers "Plus Friday" where campuses do not hold classes on any Fridays but do have the campus offices open so students can obtain from professors who are required to be on campus on Friday until noon.
